India and China

Picture
Description: Students research the population growth of China and India over the last decade.  Based on these values they determine a linear growth model for each country and use these to predict when the population of India will overtake that of China.

Standards:
  1. Finding a linear equation given the y-intercept and another point.
  2. Calculation of slope.
  3. Finding the intersection of a system of linear equations.
  4. Interpreting a linear model.

  • pdf of a worksheet for students
  • Link to interactive geogebra document (you should open downloaded file from geogebra directly, see next link).
  • Link to geogebra -free download
  • Geogebra directions for scatterplots and lines of best fit.  Start on p. 13.

Notes: This lab is set up to look at data from 2000 so that the y-intercept corresponds to years since 2000, this could be modified for more advance classes.
